  • What is gelcoat? Gelcoat is a type of surface coating used in the fabrication of fiberglass-reinforced composites. It is a specialized resin-based material that is applied to the mold or surface of a composite structure to create a smooth and glossy finish. Gelcoat serves both aesthetic and protective purposes.

      • Challenges of using gelcoat:

          • Supplies: It is possible to perform a repair with a 25$ DIY kit. Performing a permanent and aesthetically pleasing repair, however, requires much more equipment and supplies. Liquid gelcoat is necessary for performing a high quaility repair. Low cost DIY kits contain gelcoat paste. Liquid gelcoat must be mixed with various additives to acheive high quality results. Additives used depends on the environment and repair type. Additives include: MEKP, wax additive, Duratec, Patchaid, pigments, styrene, and silica thickener. Once gelcoat is mixed with the proper additives, it may be applied using various methods including brushing, rolling, and spraying. Highly aesthetic repairs are most easily achieved by spraying. Spraying requires specialty sprayers, air compressors, hoses, and protective supplies. High quality gelcoat repairs often require repairing the underlying fiberglass in addition to the protective gelcoat coating. That requires all of the supplies and equipment necessary for fiberglass repairs as well.
          • My Services: I began working with gelcoat in the early 2000s while working for custom boat builders. My early experiences involved seperating laminated hulls from fiberglass and gelcoat molds and restoring faded gelcoat through buffing. I began performing gelcoat repairs on my own in 2015 while providing boat repair services around the Kent Island, Stevensville, and Annapolis areas. I began performing repairs with just gelcoat, some additives, mixing equipment, brushes, and sanding and buffing equipment. After getting tired of all the sanding required after applying gelcoat with brushes, I learned how to spray gelcoat. Through trial and error I have learned the easiest methodolgy for performing high quality repairs. Now, I perform small gelcoat repairs in my backyard when I'm not busy with my full time IT career and raising children.
          • The bottom line: Gelcoat repair is a task that is worth hiring a professional to perform. Gelcoat is a difficult and dangerous product to work with. Using inadequate protection can lead to chemical injuries, hospitalization, and even death. In addition, it takes years of practice to develop the skills necessary to perform high quality gelcoat repairs. Gelcoat application is a science and an art. It takes a fundamental understanding of chemistry, experience with additives and different environmental situations, and the artistic skills of a sculptor to perform high quality gelcoat repairs. Gelcoat is very sensitive to environmental conditions. Each batch of gelcoat must be mixed presicely taking into account temperature, hidity, and forecast conditions for 24 hours after application. Incorrectly mixed gelcoat will result in undercured tacky gelcoat that isn't sandable, will deteriorate quickly, and is difficult to remove.
